"Determined to succeed and excited about the future" This is how the 28 ex-child soldiers who finished their first year at the Songo Agricultural Training Centre described their outlook on life. Each one of the students had an incredible story to tell before starting the course and the past 12 months at Songo will redefine the direction in which the remaining chapters of their lives will be written.  The students have made amazing progress both emotionally and in terms of their agricultural knowledge but perhaps most strikingly, the students have developed an incredible sense of hope for the future. The dedication of the teachers at Songo has been outstanding. It has been a new and challenging experience for them. Dealing with issues of conflict and discipline with young people who were once armed combatants has been testing but the teachers have succeeded in building a strong rapport with the students that has enabled them to effectively manage problems and provide much needed emotional support.

Recent Highlights
- 28 ex-child soldiers successfully completed the course and 21 of these are now organised and working in 4 farming co-operatives
- SLWT has provided initial crop and animal investments to the co-operatives as well as technical and moral support
- the remaining 7 project participants plan to work on a commercial farm that will be started at the training centre this year
- negotiations are ongoing with the Ministry of Education to register the Training School as a vocational institute providing a recognised diploma for project participants
-28 new project participants have registered for this year's course and have started work in the field and the classrooms
- this year's intake has included school drop-outs who were not ex-child soldiers but who are also disenfranchised and on the margins of society
- the local Songo community has embraced the project and there is a new sense of harmony between the community and these young people.

5 years have gone by quickly at TMCR!
It is hard to believe that 5 years had gone by since we first started working with the remote Thuan Mathinki Community in the Bombali District of Northern Sierra Leone. This 5 year project started in 2002 and focused on education, agriculture, health and psychosocial activities. It has been a challenging but very productive time in which SLWT has worked with the community to:
- build and staff a primary school
-fund teachers' training course in exchange for a 3 year commitment to the school
-build and staff a health clinic where no previous medical facilities existed
-revitatlise and improve farming activities that had been destroyed by the war, through a seed and tool loan scheme and technical training
- dig water wells to provide clean drinking water
- facilitate the delivery of health training include HIV awareness training
-facilitate trauma therapy through organised sporting and cultural events in the years immediately after the war

Recent highlights
Project Management - with the assistance of CCF (our partner organisation) the day-to-day management of the facilities provided by the project  were handed over to a community-based federation in December 2007.  In accordance with our 5 year plan, SLWT will no longer employ a Project Co-ordinator at TMCR although we remain committed to supporting the community.  We are thrilled that the sustainability of the project is being established through direct community ownership.

Simeon Sesay Health Clinic ? has been built and is staffed by a newly qualified nurse. We are supporting the nurse as she trains community based health facilitators, volunteers and mothers.  SLWT also continues to provide the health clinic with essential drugs and equipment.

Water wells - Having already dug 7 wells within the community, SLWT is in the process of digging a further 5 wells with funding received from the Fuserna Foundation.  The wells are scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2008.  Essential repair works are being done to the existing wells at the same time. The provision of clean drinking water makes an immeasurable difference to the health and hygiene of community members.

Kabgankona Primary - continues to function well and is at full capacity.  The school has seen a second crop of pupils pass the exams for secondary school.  Once again most of these pupils have been sent by their parents to live with other family members in towns where they will be able to access secondary schools.  Plans for the current year include creating a playing field for the pupils. Additionally one of the 5 wells being dug in the community will be located at the school so that the children will no longer have to walk to the village for water during the school day.

Reflections on Visit to SLWT's Projects by UK Photographer Jon Gee

Last summer I was inspired by stories I?d heard of Sierra Leone and decided to  volunteer  my photographic services to a charity, to see if I could make a difference. Sierra Leone was an emotional rollercoaster. Raw, crazy, and beautiful. I was deeply affected by the hope and forgiveness I saw in a country so recently ravaged by civil war.
After the first week living at the home of Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr's parents, I moved on to the  Orphanage run by Ola Smart in the Kamayama district of Freetown, a 30 minute drive down a dirt track that is so inaccessible most taxis won?t venture down it. Ola also runs SLWT?s Songo Agricultural Training Centre. Ola is an incredibly hardworking man ? and generous too, he insisted on giving me his bed for the two weeks I was there. Ola teaches the kids social skills encouraging dynamism and true cooperation with one?s fellow man. With the plentiful resources the country has, it is vital that these skills are tapped into, to maximise the potential of both the people and the land.
I was delighted to hear the very recent news that SLWT have decided to fund this extremely worthy project.
I?m a cynical person, but I was ?wowed? by SLWT. They?re small, but they?re passionate about what they do. And this passion creates efficiency and accountability, and so every penny they raise goes to the ground, enabling sustainable projects to grow and develop.
And after spending three weeks witnessing SLWT projects first hand, I?ve decided I will use a photographic exhibition to act as a fundraiser for SLWT.
You can read more about the exhibition at www.jongee.co.uk/blog
And see more of my photography work at www.jongee.co.uk

Orphanage Appeal
An orphanage that was established during the war by Ola Smart (SLWT's project co-ordinator for Songo) is under threat of closure as its current funders are no longer able to support it. The orphanage currently has 25 children who are provided with a secure home environment, a good education and sound values as wells as food and clothing.  Having been abandoned by his own family as a child, Ola is deeply committed to keeping the orphanage open and to ensuring that all the children there are cared for. SLWT would like to support Ola and the Orphanage but we would need to raise an additional £500 a month to make this happen.  Please help up meet this goal. You can:
- sign up for the run
- make a one-off donation
- make a regular contribution (see section below)

Can you make a regular commitment to SLWT?
In order to help us keep our projects running, would you please consider setting up a monthly standing order so that we know that we have a regular level of income.  This will make it possible for us to take on new projects and to expand existing ones. £20 per month will pay a teacher's salary at the Kagbankona Primary School and £10 per month will provide hot meals for 6 young people at the Songo Agricultural Training School.
