PAST EVENTS
16th September 2007 , Battersea Park
Fun Run 07 was our fourth and most successful Fun Run
so far. Unlike 2006, the weather was on our side as were many of our friends and sponsors. About £19,000 has been been raised so far. SLWT thanks all the runners, fundraisers, sponsors, donors, organisers and marshals for their efforts in making Fun Run 07 a resounding success.

1st October 2006, Battersea Park
SLWT's 5KM Fun Run 2006 was another successful day in spite of the inclement weather. Funds raised from sponsorships was just under £8,000.
18th - 23rd June 2006
This schools-based Project provided school children (aged 7-14) with the opportunity to interpret their perceptions of Displacement and Refugeeism, using different art media. The Project culminated in an Art Exhibition which coincided with Refugee Week.

A MOVING IMAGE - CHILDREN'S ONLINE ART EXHIBITION
Pupils from a selection of schools in the UK were invited to submit works of art based on the theme, 'Perceptions and Interpretations of Displacement and Refugeeism'. SLWT visited participating schools and held assemblies in which our work and the wider issue of displacement was explained to the children. Pupils were encouraged to think about what it might feel like to be displaced and to depict their thoughts through art.
The project was run concurrently with pupils from schools in Sierra Leone where many pupils had been directly affected by the decade long Civil War. A selection of work produced by pupils from the UK and Sierra Leone were exhibited at the Diorama Art Gallery in London from Sunday 18th June to Friday 23rd June 2006.
The experience of participating in this project had a significant impact on pupils and their teachers and generated a great deal of discussion and reflection. It was an amazing experience for SWLT as well and we are thrilled to present the children's work in this online gallery.

Hog's Head, 5-11 Fetter Lane, off Fleet Street EC4
This was another chance to enjoy great music from the JT Jazz band, and of course, to help raise much needed funds for our work. The evening was a great success and over £4,000 was raised.

March 4th 2006

Our thanks to all our supporters who braved the winter chill to join us for some fun and games at the Hog's Head in the City. People enjoyed old favourites such as Monopoly, Scrabble, Jenga, Chess, Draughts, Cluedo, Poker, Connect, Ludo, Buzzer and Owari. The feedback we have received to date has been great. The quiz in particular proved very popular and there have even been calls for a monthly event!
Please click here if you would like to review the quiz questions (and answers!)
All the funds raised from the night will be used towards the purchase of a new motorbike for our Coordinator in Sierra Leone. Due to inadequate roads infrastructure, bikes are an invaluable necessity for the efficient management of our projects
Sunday 25th September
Battersea Park
WELL DONE EVERYONE!!
AMOUNT COLLECTED :
£8,000

More photographs will be made available to view in our gallery shortly.
Our thanks to all the participants, marshals and volunteers of the SLWT 5K Fun Run 2005! You were all real stars on the day! We would also like to thank Garth Crooks for officially starting the Run for the second year and for his continued support to SLWT over the years.
In spite of a gloomy weather forecast, we were blessed with perfect running conditions. There was a great atmosphere as participants enthusiastically took part in a pre-race warm up lead by fitness instructor Lisa Lamberti, who kindly donated her time.
As Garth sounded the gun, it was easy to see who the runners were as opposed to the strollers. Without naming any names, it soon became apparent to the strollers that the runners meant business, especially as they were overlapped in but the blink of an eye.
Sports Therapist, Gillian Verga was kindly on hand to offer free pre and post massage sessions for a donation, which proved very popular!
It was a bit of an ‘inside job’ as far as the winners were concerned. Trustee Winston Hunter completed the course in lightening speed with the spectacular time of 20’33. He waited with great anticipation for the winning bottle of bubby, but of course, we couldn’t do that! The coveted bottle went to a well deserving Jon Swai, last year’s winner who came in with an equally impressive time of 21’59.
The female winner is a long standing supporter of SLWT. M'balu Koroma thrashed the competition to cross the tape at 27’28. Her boss promised her an extra £100 in sponsorship if she came in at under 25 minutes, but we think that being the first female is equally deserving of the extra sponsorship, don’t you Mbalu’s boss?
The children really deserve a special mention. They were not at all fazed by the distance and took part with great excitement. For the second year, Preye Koroye-Crooks (24’37) and Caitlin Hughan (27’38) took the title of first male child and first female child respectively. Looking at those times, we are sure that you will agree that we have unearthed some real talent here so watch out Paula and Martin Lel!
Our two youngest participants were aged just 10 weeks and 9 months. Well done Samuel and Chad! And their mummies of course!
We have had great feedback so far and, if you have not done so already, we invite you to send in your comments. We promise to take them all on board so that we can make next year’s Fun Run even better.

SATURDAY 25TH JUNE 2005
POET 20 CREECHURCH LANE, ALDGATE
7pm - 1am
This year was bigger and better as over 245 people come out in support of our work at the aptly named, Poet Brasserie in Aldgate. The fabulous JT Band kept us all tapping our feet and bopping our heads all night to some great comtemporary jazz. MC Breis got the crowd involved in his African infused rhymes and Sierra Leonean author Delia Jarrett-Macauley reminded us all why we were there with an extract from her new novel about child soldiers in Sierra Leone, Moses, Citizen and Me .
Painting Africa brought to life the raw talent that exists in Africa with an inspiring and colourful African Art Exhibition.
DJ Ade Daramy (with a little help from Superfly) kept us all dancing till 1am when we literally (and gently!) had to nudge people out of the door.
We thank you all for your continued support! We hope that, as well as contributing to our projects, you all had a wonderful time!
3rd OCTOBER 2004
In the early hours of Sunday 3rd October, over 100 people gathered on Battersea Park to take part in SLWT's very first 5KN Fun Run, to help raise funds for our work. Patron Garth Crooks officially started the race and handed out the prizes to the esteemed winners. The event was covered by the Wandsworth Guardian & the Wandsworth Borough News. So far, we are pleased to say that we have passed the £7000. This is a fanastic amount for a first run and it would not have been possible without your support. We wish to thank all the competitors, marshals, donors, and all who came down to lend their support.
12th JUNE 2004
"An Evening of Jazz and the Spoken Word" on 12th June 2004 featured live jazz from the excellent JT Band and poetry from London?s finest: Dorothea Smartt, Nii Parkes and Zena Edwards, and MC, Kadija Sesay. DJs for the evening were Sierra Leone's very own, Ade Daramy and Superfly. The evening was a great success and, thanks to support from our Friends, we managed to reach our target of £8000.
31st MAY 2003
A successful exhibition, "Painting Africa, Rebuilding Lives", featured works of art by various African painters, including works created specially for the event by Bartemeus Award winners, Hector Ofori and Mark Buku. By all accounts, the event was a huge success.
8th NOVEMBER 2003
In collaboration with an informal organisation, The Tower Hill Project, a Jazz benefit concert, "For Children's Sake", was held by Gwyn Jay Allen & Friends at the Richmond Parkshot Theatre on Saturday 8th November 2003. This was in aid of the construction of new school buildings at the Tower Hill Kindergarten School in Sierra Leone. Of the total money raised, £200 was donated to SLWT.
